EVANSVILLE—The Evansville Fire Department and a Rock County Sheriff's Office fire inspector are investigating a fire that destroyed the press box at the Evansville High School football field late Saturday, officials said.

Evansville School District Superintendent Jerry Roth said no one was sure Sunday afternoon how the press box caught fire, but all that's left of it is a few walls.

According to Rock County 911 records, the fire department and at least two other departments were called out about 11:30 p.m. Saturday to a fire at the press box at the Evansville High School athletic fields along Fair Street.

An Evansville police officer noticed smoke in the building during rounds, Roth said.

Evansville Fire Department on Sunday had not released any information about the fire, or how it may have started.

Roth said the fire destroyed youth and high school football equipment being stored in the press box, along with some memorabilia stored there. He said heat from the fire also warped some adjacent bleachers, and structural engineers will have to check them to see if the bleachers are safe for crowds.

The varsity boys football team has a home game scheduled at the football field on Friday, Roth said. He said the district plans to do everything it can to host Friday's game and other scheduled home games, even if it means bringing in temporary bleachers while the district works to fix the damage.
