PLOVER—Twice on Friday, Janesville’s Post 205 American Legion baseball team got off to a good start.
But in both games at the Plover Tournament, errors doomed Janesville in later innings and the team suffered a pair of losses.
Post 205 lost 10-6 to Green Bay Southwest in the afternoon, then 10-3 to Madison Impact in the nightcap. Janesville is now 20-11-1 and will need to beat host Plover today to have a chance at playing on Sunday.
“We had 21 hits in the two games, but we just continue to put free people on with walks and give teams extra outs,” Janesville coach Bob Schenck said. “Teams are taking advantage of it.”
Against Green Bay, Janesville got a first-inning home run from Brandon Hughes to take a 3-0 lead. A 4-1 lead held up into the fourth inning, when Green Bay put four more runs on the board. It added five more in the fifth and held on for the victory.
Against Madison, Janesville again took a first-inning lead, this time 2-0. But Madison answered with one in the first, then piled on nine between the fourth and sixth innings to win going away.
“We had the bases loaded and less than two outs with a chance to put more runs up (in the first),” Schenck said. “We had a chance to jump on the pitchers for five or six runs in both games, but couldn’t come up with a big hit.”
Will Theisen went 4-for-6 with a pair of runs and an RBI over the course of two games. Hughes was 4-for-8 with six RBI.
Janesville faces Plover at 8 p.m. tonight.
