JANESVILLE--Monroe Elementary School students and parents could see a familiar face in the principal's office when they return to school in September.

Superintendent Karen Schulte is recommending that Monroe's current dean of students be interim principal in the coming school year.

Pope would fill in for Principal Lori Burns, who has been away since she was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in February. Burns announced in May that she would take the coming year off.

The Janesville School Board will be asked to appoint Pope to the interim position when it meets Tuesday.

“In this very difficult time as Monroe's beloved principal, Lori Burns, fights for her life, Sally Pope has stepped in over the last four months to carry on Lori's mission and vision. … I believe she is well qualified to continue to move Monroe forward on their journey toward excellence,” Schulte said in a news release.

If approved, Pope will begin her duties at Monroe Elementary School on Aug. 12 with a one-year contract. She would work 218.5 days and be paid $82,000.

Pope was an elementary school teacher in Colorado and Fort Atkinson before joining the Janesville School District in 1998, according to the news release. She has served as an elementary and middle school counselor before being appointed dean of students at Monroe in March.

Schulte's recommendation is based on Pope's strong teaching experience and high level of knowledge of the district's discipline program, as well as her compassion and organizational and communication skills, according to the news release.

The district reported 28 people applied for the position. Three were interviewed.
