McCue captures Rock County golf title
JANESVILLE--Maddie McCue's round started and ended with a birdie.
The Milton teenager also left Riverside Golf Course with a new title: the 2013 Rock County Women's Champion.
McCue, who will be a junior at Milton High this fall, followed up her first-round 76 with a 6-over-par 77 on Sunday to win the title by four strokes. Katie Brossard was second at 157, while 16-time champion Holly LaChance was third.
“It means a lot to win on my home course—not Milton, but I play here a lot,” McCue said. “And it was nice having my dad as my caddie. He keeps me pretty calm.
“It was a great group to play with—Holly, the 16-time champ, and Katie was awesome.”
Lori Warren won the net competition in the championship flight at 128. Linda Nedland won first place in the first flight with 190, while Mary Conway topped the first flight net scores at 138.
McCue credited her father, Richard, for helping her keep her cool through the ups and downs of two rounds.
“I learned how to deal with the pressure,” McCue said. “There were a couple holes where (Katie) beat me by two or three shots. I had to keep level-headed and stay strong.”
McCue kicked off her round with a birdie at No. 1 and said she poured in several decent-legnth putts to save par or bogey throughout.
The birdie on No. 18 sealed the victory in impressive fashion.
“I was trying to always keep my score at 5 or under on each hole,” McCue said. “I putted pretty well.”
McCue has been busy playing on the junior circuit this summer. She was a member of Milton's state-tournament golf team the past two seasons.
“I'm hoping to keep playing better and hopefully my score will go down before next season,” she said. “And hopefully we make it to state again. Those are my goals.”
