Sectional baseball takes the stage
BELOIT There were times when the odds appeared stacked against the Janesville Craig and Parker baseball teams from advancing to WIAA sectional play.
Instead, the Cougars and Vikings will both be in action today at Pohlman Field in Beloit.
Parker was the No. 9 seed in the Beloit Memorial Sectional when the tournament began last week, but won a pair of games, including an upset victory over top-seeded Madison West, to advance. The Vikings play Stoughton in a sectional semifinal today at 10 a.m.
Craig trailed Milton for most of their regional final game on Tuesday, but rallied from a 5-0 deficit to win 6-5. The Cougars, the No. 3 seed, face second-seeded sectional host Beloit Memorial at 1 p.m.
The winners of the two games will meet for a trip to the state tournament—which will take place June 11-13 in Appleton, at 4:30 p.m. Parker is looking for its first state berth since 1992; Craig's last trip came in 2009.
In a Division 2 sectional at Evansville, Edgerton is hoping to avenge a sectional semifinal loss to Lodi last year when the two teams meet at the same level today at 1:30 p.m.
The winner faces the winner of River Valley and Wisconsin Dells at 4:30 p.m. with a state berth on the line. The Crimson Tide has been to state five times but not since 1990.
Orfordville Parkview's quest to reach the state championship game for a second straight year continues today at the Riverdale sectional in Muscoda.
The Vikings face Wisconsin Heights at 1:15 p.m. If they win, they'll face either Westby or Spencer in a sectional final at 3 p.m.
Parkview lost to Prescott is last year's Division 3 state title game, 4-3 in eight innings.
