ELKHORN -- A coalition of business and government groups is hosting a forum on the long-delayed completion of the U.S. Highway 12 freeway expansion between Elkhorn and Whitewater.

The reroute and expansion has been in state transportation plans for decades but has never been built.

An environmental impact study of the project was approved as part of the state's 2013-'15 biennial budget. However, last July the Wisconsin Department of Transportation decided to suspend the study, citing a lack of overall need for the project and financial constraints.

A panel of local government officials and business leaders will be featured at the discussion forum, hosted by The Redline Coalition.

The coalition is made up of the Greater Whitewater Committee Inc., Walworth County, the city of Whitewater, La Grange Township, the city of Elkhorn, the Lauderdale Lake and Pleasant Lake management districts and the Walworth County Economic Development Alliance.

The U.S. 12 discussion forum will be held from 8 a.m. to noon May 19 at Gateway Technical College campus at 400 County Highway H in Elkhorn. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required by contacting WCEDA at 262-741-8527 or online at www.walworthbusiness.com  (under upcoming events).
