More tutoring options in DDSD this year
DELAVAN — Learning doesn't just have to happen between the first and last bells of the day in the Delavan-Darien School District.
Starting in the 2014-15 school year, the district will begin offering before-school and after-school tutoring services for all elementary school students at all three Delavan-Darien elementary schools.
“We feel this service will not only help our students reach their learning goals, but it will help families with their schedules by allowing students to be in our appropriate learning environments for longer periods of time,” Superintendent Robert Crist said. “We've often had students arriving to school early or needing to stay after school or return to empty houses.
“This tutoring offers a more structured and better supervised environment for students, increasing learning and enhancing student safety.”
The district is still determining hours of operation for the before- and after-school tutoring services. Also, because the services are offered outside of the regular school day, and because they are not grant-funded, a small fee will be charged for the service. District officials do not expect the fee to be more than $2 per hour. Costs will be determined after student/parent interest levels are known. Donations will also be accepted.
“Unfortunately, our budget is too tight to offer this service free of charge,” Crist said. “The costs to families will only be to offset our program staffing costs, not to help balance district budgets. This is not a moneymaker for us, nor can it be a money-loser for us. But it is something we feel can be a tremendous benefit to our students and families.”
Over summer, the district conducted several phone surveys about possibly adding the services. The majority of the needs were found in the district's three elementary schools.
Parents interested in signing up for the services should contact their child's school's main office, 262-728-2642. For specific questions about the program, the contact the district's school administration center, 262-728-2642, option 7.
Parents of middle school students seeking similar services are encouraged to contact the Boys & Girls Club of Walworth County, which is located inside Phoenix Middle School. The Boys & Girls Club can be reached at 262-726-1242 or via email at email@example.com.
