SHARON -- An 11-year-old boy was declared brain dead at 12:38 a.m. today as authorities continue to investigate how he was shot in the head Wednesday, according to a news release from the Walworth County Sheriff's Office.

The boy was identified as Eric Gutierrez, of the town of Sharon.

Walworth County sheriffs and officers from the Sharon Police Department responded to a 911 call at 12:33 p.m. Wednesday of a shooting in a wooded area behind a home at N1602 County Highway K, just north of Sharon.

Emergency crews from the Sharon Rescue Squad arrived to find the boy with a head wound. They administered first aid, then transported him to Mercy Hospital in Janesville.

According to the release, investigators have interviewed a 13-year-old male witness, and have obtained the handgun involved in the shooting and other pieces of evidence. Authorities are not saying if the shooting was an accident, but do say the investigation remains ongoing.

The family has established a donation website of www.gofundme.com/baads8 to offset the unexpected costs.
