ELKHORN — Lakeland Animal Shelter will host its second annual Affair for Animals event June 21 at the Walworth County Fairgrounds. The event, set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., is billed as fun for the whole family, including your dogs.

“There is something for everyone at the event,” said Lakeland Animal Shelter Executive Director Kristen Perry. “There are bouncy houses and games for the kids and 30-plus vendors — some that are animal related and some that aren't.

“There will also be animal rescue groups from throughout the community and we'll even have a few adoptable shelter dogs out there as well.”

The event features free admission and parking and a variety of dog-related activities such as lure coursing, an agility course, an obstacle course and swimming pools.

Part of the excitement for Perry and her staff is to see some familiar dog faces, as she encourages residents who have adopted from the shelter to visit.

“We like when people to bring out their dogs that they adopted from us,” Perry said.

“Around lunchtime there will be a showcase ... for anyone who wants to highlight the dog that they adopted from our shelter.”

Events like Affair for Animals are part of the reason that the shelter is able to operate, and the support of the community makes all the difference, Perry said.

“We are the only shelter that covers all of Walworth County and we take in 2,500 to 3,000 animals a year. It's events like this that allow us to continue doing what we do for those animals,” she said. “We love seeing animals that have been adopted, not only from our shelter but others as well, it just helps encourage everyone and reminds us why we do what we do. The happy endings for these dogs and their families are definitely worth it.”
