WHITEWATER—Excerpts of a diary and published work recounting a man's time in Whitewater and his journey from Whitewater to Salt Lake City will be read aloud by his great-granddaughter on July 5.

Barbara Birge will read aloud memories her great-grandfather Julius Birge wrote about his daily life in Whitewater from 1861 to 1866. In 1866, he left Whitewater for Salt Lake City. The chronicles of his journey west were published in "The Awakening of the Desert" in 1912.

Birge was the first child born in Whitewater in 1839, according to the news release.

The event is from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 5, at the Cultural Arts Center, 402 W. Main St., Whitewater.

Weather permitting, the event will begin by gathering around the Birge fountain located at the Cultural Arts Center.

The Whitewater Arts Alliance and Whitewater Historical Society are co-sponsoring the event.
