Your Views: Rock County clerk’s decision on gay marriage licenses disappoints

I was stunned at Rock County Clerk Lori Stottler’s decision to immediately issue same-sex marriage licenses.

The federal court’s decision is seen by many to be unclear and open to numerous interpretations. Our state attorney general has stated that current laws are still in effect. With all due respect to Ms. Stottler, she is not an attorney nor trained to interpret the law. I hope her immediate support of homosexual marriages is not a sign of prejudgment or bias on her part.

In any case, I think her decision was impulsive, perhaps driven by a personal agenda and lacking in prudent reservation. She certainly disregarded the legal opinion of Wisconsin’s attorney general. Is the county clerk not accountable to anyone, or obligated to seek professional legal consultation in such serious matters? In any case, it is a sad day.

County clerks have no jurisdiction regarding constitutional issues. The office is designed to follow state law, not to define it or to interpret it.
